International HR Day 2026: Empowering People to Lead Change

At a time when the world feels quite wonky, there’s something powerful about the theme for this year’s International HR Day:

“Empower People to Lead Change.”

Because if the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that change doesn’t always sit neatly in business transformation plans. It lives in people. In how safe they feel, how trusted they are, and whether they believe their voice matters. And that’s why HR sits right at the centre.

We’re working in a moment where the working world is shifting faster than many organisations can keep up. AI is no longer a future concept, it’s here and it’s here to stay. Roles are evolving and expectations are rapidly changing. Alongside this, employees are also asking better questions about purpose, fairness, and flexibility. These two factors combined are a lot for any business to manage.

The 2026 theme calls this out clearly, focusing on three big areas: future-focused leadership, human-centric AI, and continuous learning. But for me, it comes back to something much simpler. It’s about how we show up for people.

  • Future-focused leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating environments where people feel trusted enough to find them. The best leaders I see right now aren’t the loudest or the most directive, they’re the ones who listen properly, explain the “why”, and give their teams space to think, challenge, and grow.

  • Human-centric AI isn’t really about technology. It’s about trust. Yes, AI can improve productivity and reshape how work gets done, but if people don’t understand it or feel nervous about how it's being used, it creates distance rather than progress. HR’s role here is critical: to make sure innovation never comes at the cost of transparency, fairness or human connection. Well-thought-out and communicated AI policies and procedures are essential here to ensure that you stay ahead of the curve. Companies who don’t adopt this and allow their employees to embrace it in some form or other will get left at the curb, which is why so many new clients are asking us to create AI policies and approaches which are sympathetic to their organisation's ways of working, as well as ensuring that the rest of their handbooks are relevant and modern.

  • Continuous learning isn’t a programme. It’s a culture. A mindset. One where development isn’t reserved for high potentials or annual reviews but becomes part of everyday work. Because the reality is, change is no longer something we “prepare for” it’s something we live in. A lot of our clients have already recognised this and have implemented continuous learning programmes to support this imperative. Our Management and Leadership Essential training covers everything from the role of the people manager, how to effectively manage performance, through to delegation, communication, feedback and time management.

What is more impressive is the link between development and retention. When employees feel invested in, they are more likely to stay, with one source showing that companies with structured development programmes see up to 50% higher retention rates than those without.

What I love about this year’s theme is that it doesn’t position HR as a support function. It positions us as enablers of change, by creating conditions where people feel able, and confident enough, to step forward and help lead it themselves.

So this International HR Day, I think it’s worth pausing and asking:

  • Are we building leaders who create trust, not just deliver results? Are we adopting technology in a way that brings people with us, not leaves them behind?

  • And are we genuinely investing in people’s growth, or just talking about it?

Because when we get this right, change stops feeling something done to people… and starts becoming something led by them, which is where real, sustainable progress begins.
